Environment and economy in harmony

Combining ecology and economy is one of the most important tasks of the next decades in order to reduce climate change and its consequences. It is essential to be able to count on the support of manufacturers and retailers.

One of these decision-makers or strong partners is the Federal Committee of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce of the paper, office supplies and stationery industry, which has supported the "Clever Shopping for Office and School Initiative" since the beginning.

Pointing out opportunities and setting a good example!

The task of the federal committee is primarily to support the members in recognising current market trends and using them for business success. The communication goes to the companies, in the concrete case the application of the "Clever Shopping for Office and School Initiative", to the market participants of the stationery sector. Member information and service are important business areas of the federal committee. In the meantime, 637 paper retailers and branches including the SKRIBO dealers as well as LIBRO, PAGRO Diskont, Thalia and Interspar are actively participating in the campaign UmweltTipp!

With the initiative and the commitment of the people working in the sector, the trend towards sustainable purchasing is becoming more and more pronounced, especially in the important area of school purchases. But also in procurement, whether public or by companies, sustainability is playing an increasingly noticeable role in the awarding of contracts.

Manufacturers with vision

In addition to the trade, which brings the products to the customer, the manufacturers are of course an important player in bringing more climate-friendly products into circulation.

One of these companies is Format Werk GmbH, which produces school products. The company has been focusing on sustainable production for a long time. Conventionally produced exercise books pollute the global climate with an average of 225.84 grams of CO2. Format Werk was able to reduce this value to 63.87 grammes of CO2 per exercise book - almost three quarters of the average value. This was achieved by switching to paper made from 100 % recycled fibres as raw material and by CO2 savings in the in-house production process.

The Aristo company, known for the invention of the geo-triangle, based in Tyrol, has also long been committed to sustainable production. "Especially in the omnipresent plastic discussion and as a company that has been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel, we feel obliged to give our customers access to ecologically sustainably packaged high-quality products. Perhaps we will even succeed in setting a positive example for others and making them aware that "EVERYONE" can make a contribution through innovative strength and entrepreneurial courage," says Managing Director Michael Schweiger.

Together for a better future

For the future of the industry, the Federal Committee of the WKO is pleased to see in the forecast a consolidation of current trends - towards more environmental awareness and more environmentally friendly products.
