With over 150 international and national productions, Cult Film has been known far beyond the borders of Austria for more than 30 years. Founded in 1992 by Burkhard Ernst and co-managed since 2018 by producer Katharina Ernst, the film production company realizes cinema and television projects and independently develops fictional content and documentaries.
Cult Film was founded by owner Burkhard Ernst and the legendary director and screenwriter Niki List, who sadly passed away far too soon. The company’s name originates from the cult film Müllers Büro (written and directed by Niki List), which celebrated enormous success in the 1980s and captivated audiences both at home and abroad. With this work, List made cult history in a unique genre, shaping the philosophy of Cult Film, which continues to commit itself to the highest quality in its projects.
Cult Film sees itself not only as a production company executing projects but also as an active developer of ideas. The goal is to entertain cinema and television audiences while also presenting them with unusual and thought-provoking content. A key focus is the development of stories—either independently or in collaboration with broadcasters and writers. Strong partnerships are built along the way, and the financial realization of projects is achieved on an international level together with funding institutions and broadcasters.
The Cult Film team excels in remaining highly dedicated even in challenging situations and complex production environments—circumstances that affect film production now more than ever. Their unwavering perseverance is one of the core pillars of their continued success.
"So haben wir dich nicht erzogen" (vormals: Rate mal wer heute kocht)
Short description of the project:
In the satire “Guess who’s cooking today,” author Uli Brée shows how perspectives have shifted in today’s society. While it used to be unthinkable for the son to be homosexual and possibly bring his boyfriend home, in a time of “wokenes” and “political correctness” it is questionable for the daughter of a same-sex couple to be heterosexual.
