Schools as pioneers for climate protection

Educational institutions that are certified with the Austrian Ecolabel stand for sustainable management and environmentally conscious actions. The label creates structures to integrate environment, health and educational quality into everyday school life in the best possible way. The number of schools that meet the requirements is continuously increasing.

The sustainable measures taken by the schools, which also reach into the school classrooms and teach a conscious approach to sustainability in a playful way.

Climate Protection Minister Leonore Gewessler is pleased to be able to award the Austrian Ecolabel to schools again this year. Together with ambitious educators and committed pupils, this will raise environmental awareness in Austria's schools and their communities. Initiatives like the Ecolabel are the key to a climate and environmentally friendly future.

The Minister of Education, Martin Polaschek, was also impressed by the commitment to environmental protection shown by the directors, teachers and students themselves in the educational institutions. The BMBW's goal is to anchor the idea of energy efficiency and sustainability even more strongly in the entire education sector. On the one hand, we have been able to launch numerous initiatives to raise awareness for more sustainability and energy efficiency with our 'Energy:Conscious' programme. On the other hand, we are also examining at schools and in school construction where we can work even more energy-efficiently and sustainably. The eco-label is an important initiative already in place here to award particularly sustainable schools.

In her ceremonial speech, em. Univ. Prof. Helga Kromp-Kolb pointed out the importance of education when it comes to jointly achieving good long-term solutions for the manifold problems of our time.
