In the supermarket, Judith, in her late thirties and single, meets Hannes. Shortly thereafter, he appears in her elegant Viennese lamp store, which she runs with the support of her apprentice Bianca. Hannes, an architect, single, and in the prime of his life, is not only the dream of all mothers-in-law – Judith's friends are also completely enthusiastic. At the beginning, Judith enjoys the love he showers upon her. However, soon she feels overwhelmed and confined by his intense devotion. The exemplary son-in-law turns out to be highly dangerous. Deaths are piling up around Lake Ossiach this winter. An unknown dead woman washes up on the shore of the mini-golf course, a diabetic woman dies of hypoglycemia on a park bench and another lady is found dead in her house. All the deceased were old and alone, not least because - unlike in the past - there are hardly any places of communication in the village. No pubs, no social life - the lakeside area, so popular and lively in summer, is in hibernation. Perhaps these are natural deaths caused by old age, but policewoman Martina Schober (Jutta Fastian) and her superior Rauchenberger (Clemens Berndorff) have a feeling that something might be wrong and ask Chief Inspector Acham (Pia Hierzegger) from the Klagenfurt Criminal Police Office for help.

Although there are no clear indications of outside culpability, Acham and Martina start investigating and do indeed come across suspects. For example, the estate agent Fuhrmann (Fritz Karl), who is after the houses of the deceased, the unemployed Mario (Kevin Brand), who is always in need of money, or Jenny (Sophie Aujesky), whose boat rental business is going very slowly. It is his friend and former colleague Scherf (Michael Menzel), who until recently was imprisoned for the murder of his wife. When Haller arrives at the clinic, the dying man can only give him two cryptic requests. For Alexander, a new case begins, which brings up old doubts: Was it a fatal mistake that he handed over the investigation back then due to bias? Soon, the investigation focuses on a Viennese coffeehouse empire, where far more than melange and espresso is at stake. Alexander Haller (Philipp Hochmair) meets the head of the Vienna priest school, Wimmer (Martin Feifel), during a concert visit. The clergyman asks the special investigator of the criminal police to inquire about a protégé who has been missing for days. Haller’s call to Commissioner Janda (Jaschka Lämmert) brings certainty: the missing person has been murdered! An initial lead takes them to the noble palace of the Brohnstein family, who run a club and an art gallery. At first glance, there seems to be no connection to the murdered individual, but the siblings Franziska (Martina Ebm), Johannes (Johannes Zirner), and Felix (Hannes Wegener) appear to be hiding something. And Wimmer, who has been a confidant to the Brohnsteins since the death of their parents, also seems to know more than he is willing – or able – to say.

Als Uhudler-Bauer Alois Fabsits (Heinz-Arthur Boltuch) tot in seinem Weinkeller aufgefunden wird, deutet alles auf einen tragischen Gärgas-Unfall hin. Die vielen Einsatzfahrzeuge machen Inspektor „Schiffi“ Sifkovits (Thomas Stipsits), der eigentlich seinen freien Tag hat und Zeit mit Mama Baba (Erika Deutinger) verbringen sollte, neugierig. Auf keinen Fall einmischen, heißt es von seinem Chef in Eisenstadt, doch Sifkovits wittert ein Verbrechen und tut, was er tun muss – ermitteln natürlich! An Tatverdächtigen mangelt es nicht: Mit seinen Angestellten und Konkurrenten ist Fabsits nämlich nie zimperlich umgegangen.
