As one of the largest cultural institutions, we play an important role in developing a sustainable future. With the tools of theatre art, we show old rituals and practices as well as changes in our society and open up new spaces of imagination. Climate change is one of the major challenges of our time - we want to face it in a visionary way.

We are committed to ecologically sustainable theatre work in all three locations.

  • The Burgtheater GmbH is committed to the Paris climate goals and we undertake everything possible within our scope of action helping to overcome the overall climate and ecological crisis.

  • As one of the largest and most renowned cultural institutions in Austria with more than 500 employees, we are aware of our special role as pioneers in creating a sustainable future. The performing arts have always negotiated the social upheavals and challenges of our time, opening up new imaginative spaces and perspectives of the future. The climate crisis obliges us to transfer this socio-political mission to all operational processes and to develop, implement and communicate visionary solutions in terms of sustainability. This is how we create creative and curious minds for a sustainable future.

  • We stand up for artistic freedom. We are convinced that the development of ecologically sustainable production and work processes can be combined with the lasting preservation of artistic freedom. Moreover, creating art in a way of highest quality, we also align our theatre work with the goal of ecological, social and economic sustainability.

  • In daily practice, the continuous reduction of the „ecological footprint“ receives increased attention. We are committed to design our work processes in an environmentally and climate friendly way. To this end, we have anchored the environmental management system according to EMAS. We communicate this commitment within the company, analyse all aspects of daily work for possible improvements and develop more environmentally friendly solutions.

  • We use resources carefully and sparingly: Water, energy, packaging or office supplies. We rely on reuse and recycling if possible. We pay special attention to the procurement of products and services that are energy-efficient and recognisable as ecologically sustainable. Business trips are made by climate-friendly public transport when possible. We encourage the public to travel to the theatre by public transport.

  • We inform our working partners, suppliers and guest artists about our ecological standards and goals with signing of a contract. In addition we communicate our clear commitment to ecological sustainability to our audience in a public and digital way.

We want to anchor an active environmental policy in the whole way of thinking and acting at all our organisational units and locations and that every individual fills this idea with energy and action. With the help of our environmental management system, we commit ourselves to the continuous improvement of our environmental performance and ensure not only compliance with all legal and other binding obligations, but also the fulfilment of voluntary commitments.
