KunstHaus Wien: Hundertwasser house sustainably converted

The KunstHaus Wien shows how it's done: the sustainable conversion of the museum in the Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna's third district underlines the relevance of the constant environmentally friendly commitment of companies already certified with the Austrian Ecolabel. But companies that would like to be certified can also find inspiration here.

The logo of the Austrian Ecolabel was designed by the Viennese artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. It is therefore no coincidence that the KunstHaus Wien with the Hundertwasser Museum has been awarded the Austrian Ecolabel.

Modernization according to the most sustainable standards

After several months of refurbishment, the museum has now been completely converted from fossil fuels to renewable energy. The centerpiece is the building's new hydrothermal energy supply, which has reduced energy consumption by 75%. In addition, the lighting system has been completely converted to LED lamps and the more than 260 different plant species are irrigated by a newly installed groundwater cyst.

At the same time, attention has been paid to an optimized guidance system for visitors and accessibility has been improved. The foyer has also been redesigned as part of this. The entire building technology now also meets the most modern and sustainable standards. Overall, the renovation budget of 3.5 million euros was adhered to.

The Hundertwasser exhibition

In keeping with the design of the museum, 170 works by Friedensreich Hundertwasser are on display as a new permanent exhibition, with many exhibits having not been on public display for a very long time or never before. Each exhibit is accompanied by informational texts by the artist himself. The exhibition focuses in particular on environmentally and human-friendly construction, which was driven forward by Hundertwasser's work.

As part of the first Vienna Climate Biennale, which runs from April 5 to July 14, 2024, the KunstHaus Wien not only deals with important topics relating to species protection, biodiversity, climate protection and sustainability in its other exhibitions.
